The Bremen marketplace
Around the marketplace the history of Bremen can be seen especially impressive. Direct at the market place you can see the famous statue Roland, the city hall and the cathedral of Bremen. "Right next door" you will find the Bremen Town Musicians and the historic Böttcherstraße. Many other sights can easily be reached directly from the market place. The market place is in the city centre, thus you can stroll around from there. In October, in the fifth season of Bremen, the "free market" is there, the small market on the market place and in December the Bremen christmas market.
The famous Roland statue of Bremen
The Bremen "Statue of Liberty" is since 1404 a symbol for justice and freedom. The Bremen Roland is the biggest Roland statue of Germany. Together with the Bremen City Hall the Roland was declared UNESCO World Heritage in 2004. It is looking directly to the cathedral. The distance of the knees corresponds exactly to the ancient measure, the Bremen Elle. A cripple sits between the legs who is said to have crawled around the Bürgerweide in 1302. This area was given to the citizens of Bremen by Countess Emma, today the municipal hall Bremen is located here, which is used for various fairs and events.
Bremen Town Musicians
On the west side - and thus the left side - of the Town hall, you can see the most famous representation of the Bremen Town Musicians: the bronze figure was designed by the artist Gerhard Marcks in 1951. The Bremen Town Musicians are part of the fairytale of the Brothers Grimm, which is very popular not only in Bremen, but also in the surrounding. According to the traditions, the wish will come true, you have while you touch the front legs of the donkey.
Bremen Town Hall
Together with the statue Roland, the Bremen Town Hall was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The senate and the mayor of Bremen have their seat in the Town Hall. At the house front to the market place, you can see eight figures of the emperors and the electors. . At the house fronts to the east and to the west, you can see further figures that represent wisdom and good faith. At the second archway of the Town Hall there is a picture of a Bremen legend, the „Bremen Gluckhenn" that according to the legend, had contributed to the foundation of the Hanseatic city, because it showed the fishermen a place to settle.
The Bremen Town Hall was built in 1405-1410 (Gothic) and was in the 17th century provided, with a façade in the Weser-Renaissance style.
Bremen quarter Schnoor
The Schnoor quarter is the city's oldest quarter with many excellent restaurants. Like pearls on a string (low German Schnoor or Snoor), the small houses of the 15th and 16th century are tightly rowed to one another.
